Our name, our home
Please assist us in naming our future community spaces! We're hoping for a name that could be used to describe our spaces in Whitehorse, Watson Lake & Dawson City. After receiving suggestions from the community, and polling the staff, it was determined that the following options held the most appeal.
"The Space"
Painted with the broadest brush stroke, it is no surprise that “The Space” resonated with us. This name is many things: a blank canvas for us to imagine a universe of possibilities, a name which can welcome a broad range of people, and by far the simplest name!
"The Out House"
Funny! We chose this option because we believe that it could bring levity and humour to our space/organization. A double meaning signifying the liberation and beauty of being “Out”, while reflecting the daily reality of living in the North. Additionally, the outhouse, as a place of “business”, is typically Non-Gendered! This name offers a discreet nod to the ongoing issues of access to public bathrooms with regards to the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
"The 4th House"
Astrology is important for many queer folks. There are 12 houses in a person's astrological chart -- the first three are the most common and relate directly to a person’s identity. The Fourth House symbolizes our relationship to Home and Family. Planets moving across the Fourth House often encourage us to invest in our infrastructure by creating more private, nurturing spaces that make us feel safe, loved, and cared for. The Fourth House also rules your relationships with people (and pets) who are family, either blood or chosen.
"The Doorstep"
The Doorstep is a familiar point in the home, marking the start of a new journey or an arrival into a new environment. For us, the name carries a sense of change, a gathering point, and a place for greeting and welcoming people in. While queer Yukoners have had to travel long distances to find services and supports in the past, we're excited to finally offer this space right at your doorstep!
"The Landing"
A landing is a place where you can find solid ground, a sense of safety, and new beginnings. It is a space that welcomes people from many different journeys, and is a point of connection to others and to community. This name reflects our hopes of creating a drop-in space that offers a soft landing for our community!
"The Clearing"
A natural forest clearing is a break from the dense woods and a safe place to set up camp and rest. Recognizing that many aspects of our identities and lives can be complex, the clearing offers a space for us to reorient ourselves, find clarity, and take a break!
